1907
Beginnings
Kemper Construction Started

1907 George “Geo” W Kemper started Kemper Construction Company in Minot, North Dakota. The first big project was digging the basement of the St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Minot with mules and drag buckets. In 1910, he purchased the first steam shovel in North Dakota and later acquired a steam trencher.

1923
California
Moved to Los Angeles

He moved to Los Angeles, California in 1923 and started contracting sewer and water projects with his sons, Max, and Paul, joining him in the business.

1935
A New Era
Retirement and Diversification

In 1935 Geo W Kemper retired. Kemper Construction Company of Los Angeles diversified into tunneling with Max Kemper becoming the President of Kemper Construction of Los Angeles. Paul Kemper graduated from the University of North Dakota with a BS in Civil Engineering and in 1935 became the Secretary/Treasurer of Kemper Construction in Los Angeles. 

1946
Post-War
Returning to North Dakota

In 1946, Paul Kemper returned from serving in the Army in World War II and then returned to Minot and started Kemper Construction Company up again, specializing in sewer water work throughout North Dakota.

1972
Another George
New Leadership

In 1972 Paul’s son, George W Kemper, graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of North Dakota. In 1976, George returned to Minot to run a crew for Kemper Construction Company, become the Vice President in 1978 and assumed ownership and the presidency of the company in 1985. Under George’s leadership, Kemper Construction Company diversified into trenchless construction and performed the first large scale water main pipeline bursting project in New Town, North Dakota installing 20,000 linear feet of 6” water main and numerous services.

2014
The Legacy Lives On
New Ownership

In 2014, George sold Kemper Construction Company but remained an active advisor and champion for the business.

Kemper Construction Company continues to lead the way in water and sewer installation throughout North Dakota and to innovate procedures to increase efficiency for our customers and the safety of our employees.

It is in the 100 plus-year legacy and innovation of Kemper Construction Company that we are honored to continue to be locally owned and operated and take immense pride in serving the communities we live in.
